The California Growers Association said this fruit is sweet crisp like an apple and sweet like a pear.
Peak season: October through January
Price: This yummy little guy was about $0.33 when I purchased it at the store. Not too bad a price.
How to choose: You want a ripe fruit, it should be yellow-orange and firm. Be careful because they bruise easily. Avoid fruit with soft spots.
How to eat: This fruit is very easy to eat, just wash and dry, cut away the green leaves and enjoy.
Suggestions: It would be good in fruit salads, baked goods, can be eaten like an apple. It will not brown when set out so don’t hesitate to put a persimmon on your next fruit plate. Also try it with a squeeze of lime to heighten the flavor.
This fruit was mentioned as a substitute for tomatoes in “8 foods you should eat every day,” from the author of eat this not that.
Tate’s take: This fruit was slightly sweet, it did indeed remind me of a pear, but seemed just a little starchy. It was good and I will enjoy again, I think we a squeeze of lime, and maybe in a fruit salad.
I’ve never seen this fruit before. I thought it was a not so ripe tomato. I love tomatoes by the way. I’m going to look for it and try it though. Thanks
